House Alterations & Additions in Cooks Hill - New South Wales

As in many of our renovation projects, a series of unfortunate previous alterations were removed in order to recover the integrity of the original building. The brief was to upgrade a three-storey timber terrace house in Newcastle on a sloping site with impressive views of the city

Circulation areas are used to create additional living space, and the basement is extended to accommodate the main bathroom. To allow the rear of the house to benefit from the stunning views, the first floor veranda is remodelled and elegantly transforms into a winter garden with floor to ceiling glazing. As a semi-outdoor space it also provides an excellent climate buffer during hot summers

External materials and finishes are chosen to maintain congruence with the existing terrace house. These include louvre windows in timber frames, fibre cement cladding and white paint. Some internal areas have more elaborate finishes such as green or grey glass mosaic tiles, which create highlights in this simple and tranquil home. By avoiding the temptation to extend the existing footprint of the house, the established rear garden with its numerous banana palms remains unchanged
